The rural region of Appenzell, also called Appenzellerland, lies in the north east of Switzerland.
It is a hilly landscape with lots of small farmhouses spread everywhere as agriculture is an important economic sector in the region. But it is also an alpine region with the impressive Alpstein mountain range in the south and alpine farming is a very important tradition. The farmers take their cattle up to the mountain meadows in the summer months and bringing it back down to the valleys, usually in September, is a big cultural event for the families which is celebrated with lots of pride.
I spent a few days in the Appenzellerland in winter. Where in summer you see a lot of cattle on the meadows, in winter the hills are popular for cross-country skiing and winter walks.
